If you’ve ever said, “The video is perfect — can we change the thumbnail?”, you’re not alone. Thumbnails feel like they should be part of the video, but they aren’t.
What is a thumbnail?
A thumbnail (sometimes called a cover image) is a separate image file that represents your video before someone clicks play.
Here are the key things to understand:
- A thumbnail is a separate file (usually JPG or PNG) that you upload into the platform where you’re publishing the video.
- Many platforms allow custom thumbnails, but the options vary from platform to platform.
- Some platforms let you upload a custom image, some only allow you to select a frame from the video.
- Important: the thumbnail you see on review links (for example Frame.io) is not the thumbnail that will appear when you upload your video elsewhere. Review platforms auto-generate a thumbnail purely for preview and feedback purposes.
In short: if the thumbnail looks odd on a review link, it doesn’t mean your published video will look the same.
How to customise the thumbnail on common platforms
When uploading your video, look for options labelled Thumbnail, Cover, or Edit cover. Below are official guides for the most common platforms.
YouTube
YouTube allows you to:
- choose from auto-generated thumbnails, or
- upload a custom thumbnail image via YouTube Studio.

Vimeo
Vimeo lets you:
- select a frame from the video, or
- upload a custom thumbnail image.

Instagram (Reels and video posts)
Instagram uses the term Cover rather than thumbnail.
- You can select a frame from the video, or
- upload a cover image from your device (especially for Reels).

Note: Instagram may crop covers differently depending on where the video is displayed (profile grid vs Reels feed).
On Facebook, thumbnail options depend on how you’re posting (organic post, Reel, or ad), but you can usually:
- select a frame, or
- upload a custom thumbnail image.

How we can help
If the thumbnail matters to you (and for marketing videos, it usually should), we can make this easy.
Along with your final video delivery, we can provide:
- a small selection of professionally chosen thumbnail images,
- exported as high-quality JPGs,
- ready for upload to YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, Facebook, or your website.
This avoids relying on random auto-generated frames and gives you proper options when it’s time to publish.
If you’d like thumbnails included with your next project, just let us know upfront and we’ll scope it in.
